Summer Camp 2026: Wildlife, Wonder, and Outdoor Adventures!

Summer Camp 2026 at the Youth Science Institute was filled with curiosity, discovery, and unforgettable wildlife encounters! From hands-on science activities to outdoor adventures, our campers had opportunities to explore the natural world, make new friends, and develop a deeper appreciation for the environment around them.

This year, we placed a special emphasis on outdoor awareness, healthy habits, and meaningful connections with wildlife, helping campers build the confidence and skills to explore nature safely and responsibly.

Staying Cool, Staying Hydrated, and Exploring Safely

At YSI, outdoor education goes beyond learning about plants and animals. We believe it’s equally important to teach children how to care for themselves while enjoying the natural world.

Throughout the summer, our instructors emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, protecting ourselves from the sun, and recognizing when it’s time to cool down. Campers were encouraged to drink water regularly, seek shade, take breaks, and pay attention to how their bodies feel during outdoor activities.

These everyday practices help children develop greater awareness of their surroundings and understand how to prepare for changing weather conditions. By making outdoor safety a natural part of the camp experience, we hope to inspire lifelong habits that encourage safe and confident exploration.

Introducing Chinchilla Fridays: Meet JoJo & Oreo!

One of our most exciting additions to Summer Camp 2026 was Chinchilla Fridays! This new weekly animal experience gave campers across our summer programs the opportunity to meet two of YSI’s newest animal ambassadors: JoJo and Oreo!

These adorable twin brothers quickly became a highlight of the summer, introducing campers to the fascinating world of chinchillas and their remarkable adaptations.

Through up-close encounters with JoJo and Oreo, campers had the opportunity to learn about their incredibly soft fur, unique behaviors, and the special adaptations that help chinchillas thrive in their native habitats in the Andes Mountains of South America.

Chinchilla Fridays also provided an opportunity to discuss responsible animal care, respectful wildlife interactions, and the importance of protecting animals and their natural environments.

Of course, getting to meet JoJo and Oreo was an exciting experience all on its own! Their fluffy appearance and curious personalities made them memorable additions to our YSI animal ambassador family.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Nature Enthusiasts

Whether observing wildlife, investigating local ecosystems, or participating in hands-on science activities, our summer camps are designed to spark curiosity and encourage exploration.

By combining outdoor experiences with interactive environmental education, we strive to help campers develop critical thinking skills, build confidence, and strengthen their connection with nature.

From learning how to stay safe on a hot summer day to discovering what makes chinchillas such extraordinary animals, every experience offers another opportunity to learn something new.

Here’s to More Adventures!

Summer Camp is about more than just spending time outdoors. It’s about creating meaningful experiences that encourage children to ask questions, discover new interests, and develop a lifelong appreciation for science and the natural world.

We’re grateful to our wonderful campers, families, and dedicated instructors for being part of the YSI community.

Here’s to another summer of exploration, discovery, and plenty of chinchilla cuteness!
